Desktop Restrictions and Requirements

The CIS Network Group desktop connection service is designed to provide a commodity network connection to the university community. The cost of the campus network backbone is borne by CIS.

Standards

In an attempt to maintain the reliability, speed, and security of the network, all installations done by CIS will meet the following standards:
  1. All new connections to the campus network will be managed Ethernet because of the significantly better reliability and management. The network equipment used will automatically isolate failed equipment, and will support SNMP management for rapid detection and diagnosis of problems.
  2. All new connections will be made in a fashion that prevents network eavesdropping.
  3. All twisted-pair connections will be made with at least Category 5 wiring and hardware in order to support future network technologies.
  4. No additional thinwire (10Base2) Ethernet distribution equipment will be purchased by CIS for the campus network. Thinwire installation requests will be handled on a case-by-case basis depending on the availability of thinwire distribution equipment. Thinwire installations will be billed the standard parts-and-labor charges.

Restrictions and Requirements

The following restrictions apply to all users of desktop connections:
  1. All desktop connections have the restriction of one user device per connection. Desktop connections may not be used in conjunction with other networking equipment to provide more than one user device to the campus network. Violations of this restriction will result in the disabling of the desktop connection until the situation has been corrected.
  2. All use of the campus network must abide by the policies and procedures of TAMU and TAMUS and must follow local, state and federal laws. Any violations may result in administrative and/or legal action.
  3. All users should recognize that the campus computer network is a shared resource. Any activity that hinders the Network Group's ability to ensure reliable operation of the campus network may result in disabling of the desktop connection.
  4. Desktop connections and all of the network infrastructure that supports them are managed by the CIS Network Group. No modification or alteration of this infrastructure by the customer is allowed. Any problems or other issues concerning the network infrastructure should be reported to CIS for handling.
