The CIS Network Group supports registering of Top Level Domain names outside of the tamu.edu name space as long as they meet the following criteria:
- Only requests for domains in the .org Top Level Domain that are intended for non-profit use are allowed. The .com and .net Top Level Domains are specifically not allowed.
- In the case of a faculty/staff related request the domain must have a sponsoring department for it. In the case of student related requests the sponsoring department must be the department of Student Activities.
The sponsorship must take the form of a memo dated and signed by the sponsoring department head. The memo must describe how the establishment of the domain relates to the mission of the university and must state the department's acceptance of responsibility for any and all administrative issues arising from the establishment of the domain.
- Only requests from departments that are part of Texas A&M University System will be considered.
- The domain must be managed and supported by the CIS Network Group on the campus DNS servers.
- The requestor must cover all fees related to the registration of the requested domain.
Please note the following:
- Depending on the DNS records requested for the domain, inverse DNS resolution (the mapping of an IP address to a domain name) may not be possible.
- Depending on the overall load this service represents, a recurring fee may be assessed by the CIS Network Group in the future.
- Annual resubmission of the sponsoring letter is required.
- Please allow 5 business days after receipt of the sponsoring letter and email for the transaction to be completed.
Procedure
- The requestor must obtain the sponsorship letter as described above and provide it to the CIS Network Group at Mail Stop 3472.
- The requestor must email the CIS Network Group at dns@tamu.edu and provide
The technical contact should include a NetID and be able to log into NIM. If there are multiple technical contacts administrating this domain, include this information for each.
- technical and administrative contacts information for the requesting entity,
- the requested domain name, and
- the network addresses with which this domain should be associated.
- Once the letter and email are received and the domain approved, the CIS Network Group will initiate the necessary transaction. The CIS Network Group will notify the requestor and the department head when the transaction is complete and the domain active in NIM and DNS. To expedite the request, fax a copy of the letter to 862-8090 addressed to CIS Networking Domain Request.
- The requestor must register the domain with a domain registration service. This can be done concurrently with the previous step. For the technical contact information for the registration service, use:
