Digital Subscriber Line

DSL is a technology that gives you an always-on connection to the Internet. It uses the existing phone wire that runs to your residence with new equipment (DSL modems) put on both ends of the wire. The specific types of DSL vary but are collectively referred to as xDSL.

DSL at TAMU

Effective January 1, 2008, Texas A&M University will no longer offer TAMU DSL, the Verizon service that provided direct Internet access to the campus network. Current TAMU DSL customers must select and arrange for an alternative service provider such as Verizon Online or Suddenlink Communications. For users opting for DSL, this change will result in higher connection speeds for a lower price than TAMU DSL.

Take note of the following when switching to a new service:

  • You may experience a multiday outage during the transition to a new service provider.
  • Installation and modem fees may apply.
  • Changing to a new Internet provider will move your computer outside the campus firewall. Installing a VPN client may be necessary to access some university resources.
  • To obtain payment of your Internet service through a university account, you need to submit an ADSL work order to University Communications.
