Normally, DNS is updated automatically once a day at 4:00 am. At this time, any changes that have been made in NIM before 1:30 am are pushed out to the DNS system. In some cases, changes need to be made outside of this system. These changes are done manually by the DNS administrators. Manual DNS changes will only be performed when one of the following situations occur:
- Data loss (Mail being lost, etc)
- Unforeseen events (Fire, Water, Power, etc)
- Support restrictions (Vendor will only be available at certain times)
In cases where the update can be scheduled, we require that 48 hours advance notice be sent to us between Monday and Thursday. This is to allow us to schedule an administrator to perform the change, as well as giving us time to review the change, catch any errors that the requester may have made, and answer any questions that may arise.
In all cases, changes must be in NIM the day the change is to happen. Only then will changes be made in DNS. This is to ensure that the change does not get backed out by the automated process the next morning.
To request a change, please send email to nim@tamu.edu.
