Desktop and Server Connections

For instructions on the procedures to make any of the desktop and server connections listed below, please see Making a Connection Request.

The CIS Network Group offers managed commodity desktop connections to all parts of the university and organizations that are co-located on university property. Currently, when purchased by organizations that are part of the university, this service is supported and maintained at no additional recurring cost.

NOTE: there are restrictions and requirements associated with this service.

  • 10BaseT (shared)

Shared 10 mb repeated connections do not have the capability to support the peak network traffic demand generated by common desktop personal computers. As of 11/18/2002, requests for new 10 mb shared connections are no longer being accepted. For the announcement concerning this change, see here.

  • 100BaseT (switched)/1000BaseT (switched)

CIS will provide a twisted pair Fast Ethernet (100BaseTX) or Gigabit (1000BaseTX) connection to a single Fast Ethernet or Gigabit end device (PC, Mac, printer, etc.). CIS will provide all needed networking equipment and maintenance. The customer will be responsible only for providing a 100BaseTX or 1000BaseTX interface for their machine.

The user access to the connection is at the wall jack only; all other aspects of the connection (network backbone, wiring closets, routers, bridges, repeaters, etc.) are managed by CIS.

The price for connections to the network can be found at the CIS General Computing Rates page.

This price reflects the cost for equipment, wiring supplies and maintenance.

Note: Costs for large scale upgrades for entire departments and/or buildings are negotiable. For details, please contact request@tamu.edu.

    * An installation request for an area with no previous 1000BaseT connections from the nearest wiring closet will require a minimum of 8 1000BaseT connections.

  • Moves

Normal moves of existing 10BaseT, 100BaseT, or 1000BaseT desktop connections will be charged as shown below. Note that an itemized list of existing connections that will be disconnected must be included with the move request before it will be processed.

Cosmetic (as opposed to normal moves) will be billed at time and materials rates. A normal move is one in which the new outlet location is in another room or is necessary because a safety or trip hazard would exist if the old outlet location is used. A cosmetic move is a move for aesthetic purposes within the same room and where the old outlet would be fuctional with an appropriate length patch cable.

The rates for moves of existing lines can be found at the CIS General Computing Rates page.
