Departmental DHCP Server Requirements
The Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol allows administrators
to manage network host assignments from a single DHCP server.
This method helps reduce the work required when managing
a large network.
Departmental administrators are allowed to run a DHCP Server for
their departmental ip address space. However, the following
requirements must be followed:
-
The initial set-up and configuration of the DHCP Server must be
co-ordinated with the Networking and Information Security Group.
Send mail to consult@tamu.edu
to begin this process.
-
IP Addresses used in the department's DHCP address space must be
claimed in NIM and owned by the departmental administrator.
-
DHCP logs must be maintained for 30 days. Logs are required
in order to identify the individual using a machine in case of a
machine compromise or security violation. The logs must track
both the IP address/MAC address mapping, and the identity of
the individual using the ip address.
-
Anonymous access to the campus network is not allowed. This also
applies to departmental DHCP servers. Please see the
Anonymous Access Restrictions,
especially those pertaining to departmental DHCP connected hosts.
Please be aware that if your group can not maintain DHCP records,
CIS can provide this service for you.
If you have any questions concerning a departmental DHCP server,
please contact Networking and
Information Security.
