NIM (Network Information Manager) is the system used to assign and manage host IP addresses and domain name assignments. This is used for most parts of the campus network, excluding residence halls. To read more about NIM and how to obtain an IP address, see Obtaining an IP address and Domain Name.
NIM is access via ssh to nim.tamu.edu. You will need to have a valid directory services id and password to be able to use the NIM system.
How do I change my NIM password?
NIM does not store passwords. It queries the directory services database for this information. You will need to have your directory services password changed. Please refer to https://hdc.tamu.edu/reference/documentation/?section_id=650 for more information on this.
When do changes in NIM show up in DNS?
Changes are extracted from NIM at 1:30 am and loaded into DNS at 4:00 am everyday of every week.
Groups are currently created manually. To have a group created, send mail to nim@net.tamu.edu with the following information:Group name: (Format: tamu-dept-subdept) Group Manager: Group Members:
You can also optionally have the group attached to a list of hosts. Just include the list of hosts (one IP address per line) in the message.
Is there an easier way to modify information on a group of hosts?
We will process bulk changes to the ownership/group/alt contact fields. To have us perform this task, send a list of the hosts to be modified (one IP address per line) to nim@net.tamu.edu with instructions on what you would like the new fields to contain.Do not send multiple requests per message. Send each one seperately.
Do not use IP ranges (128.194.1.1-45). Each line should contain an individual IP address.
How do I change the alternate contact for a host?
The alternate contact can be changed by the owner of a host or a member of a group that is attached to the host. The menu to change the owner, alternate or group is available when you are modifying a host by selectin 9 (More Changes). Simply select 2 (Alt Contact) and enter the Directory Services ID of the person you wish to be the alternate for this host. Remember, alternates do not have privledges to make changes to a host. You can use the special NIM ID of 'nobody' if there is no alternate contact for this host.
