Why do we have a campus firewall?
The TAMU campus firewall restricts access to the TAMU campus network from the Internet. Its purpose is to protect campus resources from abuse/attack by Internet users who may take advantage of the many vulnerabilities on modern computer systems.
What firewall is used by TAMU?
The campus firewall runs the drawbridge software. This firewall works by restricting access to individual services on a specific machine. Each of these services has one or more associated TCP/IP ports that must be allowed through the firewall before the service will be accessible from the internet.
How do I find out the firewall configuration for a
certain host?
Current firewall settings for an individual machine can be viewed at https://firewall.tamu.edu. You must enter your Neo ID and password in order to enter the site. Once this information is entered, all hosts owned by you will be returned.
How do I request a new firewall exception?
Requests should be made through email to security@net.tamu.edu. It may take up to 2 business days for the request to be processed. Please include the ip address or hostname needing the exception, the port(s) needing to be opened, and the reason for the port opening. The request also must come from the owner of the host as listed in NIM. You may also request a port opening at https://scan.tamu.edu/campus/.For further information on this, please see the Campus Firewall Page.
I live in a dorm. What ports can I have open through the firewall?
Only port 80 can be opened through the firewall for students in the Residence Halls. To request port 80 be opened, fill out the form at https://scan.tamu.edu/resnet/ .
